REVIEW: Boston Bruins 5, HURRICANES 3

by Staff Writer / Carolina Hurricanes

Gary Roberts scored twice on the power-play and Ron Francis added two assists but it was not enough as the Boston Bruins tallied three goals in the third period to snap the Hurricanes’ three-game winning streak.

Trailing 2-0 in the first period, Roberts deflected a Sean Hill shot from the point to put the Hurricanes on the scoreboard. At 8:17 of the second period, Roberts accounted for his team-high eighth power-play goal, backhanding the puck past Bruins’ netminder John Grahame to tie the score. Robert Kron gave the Hurricanes their first lead of the game when he redirected a Marek Malik shot from the point at 2:05 of the third period.

After the Bruins’ Shawn Bates notched the equalizer at 6:42 of the third, center Joe Thornton tallied the game-winner on the power-play when he controlled an Arturs Irbe turnover into an empty net with 1:35 left to play.

POST-GAME QUOTES

CAROLINA HEAD COACH PAUL MAURICE:

On the game:

“We started down 2-0, we battled back and did our job, take the lead. And one of our guys gave up a goal on a tie goal and then you guys saw what happened at the end.”

On the Kovalenko penalty:

“Well, even if Kovalenko had kicked his feet out, had slew footed him, which is what he got called for. Even if he had done that, the puck’s sitting in the corner, there’s no way he can make that call. The only way you can possibly think about making that call is if the puck is sitting in the crease somewhere and you might get to it. That being said, unless you are 100% sure you can’t make that call.

The beauty of that call was when I brought him over to the bench, I said, ‘You better be sure because that’s how people lose their jobs, because this will just get brushed under the carpet, no big deal. You better be sure’. He said he was. That’s the beauty of the call.”

“You take a look at the video, it’s not even close.”

BOSTON BRUINS HEAD COACH PAT BURNS:

On the game:

“We had a great effort. They probably took us a little bit lightly. We came out scared. When you’re scared to lose sometimes you come up with games over your expectations. Our guys played hard. Grahame played well again. We got some breaks too. That’s something we haven’t got a lot of.”

“We haven’t had many breaks. I would have been again disappointed if we lost another game. If we’re at overtime and lost another game because we’re trying something new and the guys are believing in it. When you’re try something it’s different. It will last for awhile. Like I said, we’re playing on adrenaline right now.

On Brandon Smith

“He’s not a two-point a night guy. I think he can play in the National Hockey League. I’ve always thought that. Good positionally. He’s strong. He knows if he gets hit, he’s gonna make the play, take the hit , protect the puck. He won’t give it away. I’ve always thought he should have been here.”
