In their first game back from the bye week, the Carolina Hurricanes bested the Detroit Red Wings, 3-1.
Elias Lindholm scored two power-play goals and Cam Ward made 23 saves to help the Canes get back in the win column following the break.
Here are five takeaways from the Canes' first visit to Little Caesars Arena.

One
Much was uncertain about how the Hurricanes would respond coming off the five-day bye week against a team that had been in action (though had not played since Tuesday). How would the legs hold up in 60 minutes of action? How would the body handle bump and physicality that it had missed for a week? How sharp and crisp would the hands be?
"I thought we started on time," head coach Bill Peters said. "I thought we really got off to a good start."
Any fears were assuaged early on, as the Hurricanes looked sharp and rested, and it resulted in an early lead for the visiting squad.
"The second period was close to the vest both ways, and I thought we really had a good push in the third," Peters said. "I thought we had some good looks. Timing is going to get better as we get back into the rhythm of playing. I was really proud of the effort."
Two
Lindholm gave the Hurricanes the early lead on their first power play of the game. It was an easy tap-in goal after Jordan Staal fed him the puck off a rebound from a Justin Faulk shot.

Lindholm again cashed in on the power play in the third period, which proved to be the difference in the 3-1 win. Off a Teuvo Teravainen one-timer, Lindholm located the rebound and had a couple whacks at it, eventually banking the puck in off the back of Jimmy Howard.

Lindholm figures to see an elevated role with Sebastian Aho sidelined, and he took advantage of it tonight. His two-goal performance was the fifth of his career and first since Jan. 8, 2016.
"With injury comes opportunity, and that's what we have right now," Peters said.
The Hurricanes' power play was 2-for-3 on the night, the third time in the last five games that the team has scored two goals on the man advantage.
"I give them a lot of credit. They get us on the board … and the game-winner is on the power play," Peters said. "I thought our special teams was real good."
Three
Ward was called upon in net coming off the break, and he turned in a rock-solid performance in the crease, making 23 saves on 24 shots. His only blemish was a Tomas Tatar power-play tally in the first period, and his best save might have been his lateral movement across the crease to deny Henrik Zetterberg when the Canes had a 1-0 lead in the first period.

In a back-to-back situation right off the bye week, the Hurricanes will likely turn to Scott Darling in net on Sunday evening against Vegas.
Four
Justin Williams sealed the Canes' 11th road win of the season with a dagger goal late in the third period. Howard made the save on him in a transition rush but then slid out of position and lost his stick in the process. McGinn found Williams open, and he buried the shot to give the Canes a two-goal cushion late in regulation.

Five
The first game back from the bye week was test enough. The second game back might be even more so, considering it's the second half of a back-to-back and the opponent is the top team in the Western Conference, the Vegas Golden Knights.
The Hurricanes defeated the Golden Knights 3-2 in the shootout in their first meeting just over a month ago.
"It's a quick turnaround. It's a fortunate situation in that we've played them so we've got some idea in how they play," Peters said. "They're a real good team that plays with a lot of pace throughout the lineup." "We'll dig in and see what we can come up with tomorrow."
