The Carolina Hurricanes look to start a new winning streak as they take on the New York Rangers at the Entertainment and Sports Arena. The Hurricanes fell to the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday 6-3. The defeat ended the Hurricanes’ unbeaten streak at nine games (7-0-2), the longest streak since the 1984-85 season, when the team went unbeaten in nine games from March 10-29, 1985 (7-0-2). The franchise record for overall unbeaten streak is 10 (6-0-4), set between Jan. 20 and Feb. 10, 1982. The Hurricanes also saw their franchise-record nine-game home unbeaten streak (8-0-1) end on Saturday.

CAROLINA / NEW YORK SERIES:
The Carolina Hurricanes and the New York Rangers meet for the second of four games this season, and the opening game of a home-an-home series. The Hurricanes defeated the Rangers 4-3 on December 27 in the teams’ first meeting of the season. The teams square off again at Madison Square Garden on January 24 and meet for the final time of the regular season on April 4. Last year, the Rangers won the season series against the Hurricanes 3-1-0, with the Hurricanes lone victory coming on January 9, 2000 at the Entertainment and Sports Arena, a 1-0 shutout by Carolina with Arturs Irbe in net. The Rangers’ Valeri Kamensky led all scorers in the season series last season with five points (1g, 4a).
Carolina defenseman Glen Wesley played in his 1000th career NHL game Saturday afternoon. Carolina winger Jeff O’Neill has 22 points in his last 19 games (15g, 7a), scoring goals in 12 of those games. Hurricanes winger Sami Kapanen has scored 20 points (9g, 11a) in the last 22 games. Martin Gelinas (4g, 5a) and Rod Brind’Amour (4g, 5a) each have nine points in the last seven games. Carolina goaltender Arturs Irbe appeared in his 34th consecutive game Saturday and saw his franchise record-breaking unbeaten streak end at nine games (7-0-2). Irbe has started 33 consecutive games.
