GAME NIGHT:
The Carolina Hurricanes return home again for a New Year’s Eve match-up against the Chicago Blackhawks. Carolina winger Jeff O’Neill has found the net in seven of his last nine games (12/9-12/29; 7g, 2a). Hurricanes winger Sami Kapanen is now on a three-game point streak (12/26-12/29; 1g, 2a) and has scored 12 points (7g, 5a) in the last 12 games. CAROLINA / CHICAGO SERIES:
The Carolina Hurricanes and the Chicago Blackhawks meet for the first of two matchups this season on Sunday night. The two teams meet again on March 4 at United Center in Chicago. The Blackhawks and Hurricanes faced eachother just once last season, a 4-1 Hurricanes win at the Entertainment and Sports Arena on March 8. Chicago native Bates Battaglia registered his first career hat trick and the only hat trick for the Hurricanes during the 1999-2000 season, scoring all three goals in the third period against the Blackhawks. The Blackhawks lead the all-time season series 28-20-6 against the Hurricanes franchise, but the Hurricanes are 13-12-3 against Chicago all-time at home.

Hurricanes forward Jeff O’Neill ranks first on the team in goal scoring (13) and ranks third among all Carolina scorers with 22 points (13g, 9a)… The Carolina penalty kill is 57-63 (90.5%) at home—the top home penalty kill in the NHL through December 27—and 78-92 (84.8%) on the road… Hurricane forward Martin Gelinas (2g, 1a) had his team-leading fifth multi-point night of the season against the New York Rangers on December 29 in Raleigh.
