Carolina leads 3-2.

NEWS & NOTES

Limiting Turnovers:The Canes were the overall better team on Tuesday in Game 5, but a pair of gaffes led directly to Islanders goals, and in turn, the victory. "It was a great effort, just maybe a couple of bad plays that cost us," Rod Brind'Amour said on Wednesday. "Not the best of bounces, but overall, it was maybe one of the better games this series."
Make Them Make Mistakes:Jordan Martinook
gave praise to the Islanders on Thursday
for their effort when their backs were against the wall earlier this week. The Canes forward said that New York played a simple game and forced Carolina to make mistakes. On the positive side, the Metropolitan Division Champions know what to expect from their opposition tonight, with the same win-or-go-home stipulation.

The Power Play:The Canes have had multiple games this series where they've scored multiple goals on the man advantage, but they've also had a pair of games where they've struggled. Tuesday was a strange one, scoring on the power play, but having it wiped off due to a successful challenge for offsides. Which version of Carolina's power play will show up tonight? Patience and trust have been key words linked to their success lately, with Brind'Amour encouraging the units to run their sets, and not just take the first opportunity to put it on net.
In Net:Starting all five games this series, it's looked as if Antti Raanta has become "the guy" for the team in net. However, Raanta hasn't started six games in a row since last year's playoffs and it culminated in an injury. Will the team stick with him because he has been successful and strong between the pipes, or is it time for Frederik Andersen's Canes playoff debut? Or could Pyotr Kochetkov factor into the recipe somehow? The team is not holding a morning skate, so an answer won't come until at least Noon when Brind'Amour meets with the media in New York.

From The Blue Line:One of Carolina's biggest strengths all season long was the scoring from their defenseman, as the group posted a franchise-record 59 goals. Brady Skjei and Burns led the way with 18 goals each, finishing tied for third in goals by an NHL defenseman this season, trailing only Erik Karlson (25) and Dougie Hamilton (22). Thus far in this series, only Jaccob Slavin has scored for the unit, producing one of the team's 14 goals so far.
Shooting For Three:Carolina went 46-5-5 when scoring three goals or more during the regular season. They are 2-0 in the postseason when reaching the benchmark.
