GAME NIGHT: The Carolina Hurricanes open the regular season Saturday night against the defending Southeast Division champion Washington Capitals…The Hurricanes swept the Capitals this pre-season with wins at the Entertainment and Sports Arena and Washington’s MCI Center…Carolina concluded the 1999-2000 campaign 6-2-1 in their last nine games at the Entertainment and Sports Arena and won both pre-season contests played in Raleigh…While the teams play each other five times during the regular season, they will not meet again until Feb. 24 in Raleigh.

CAROLINA/WASHINGTON SERIES: The Carolina Hurricanes and the Washington Capitals meet tonight for the first of five games this season…The Hurricanes beat the Capitals in a pair of preseason games, knocking off the Capitals 6-3 at the Entertainment and Sports Arena on September 27, and 5-3 at the MCI Center on October 3… The Capitals won last year’s season series 2-1-2, with the Hurricanes’ lone win coming on November 7, 1999 by a score of 3-2 – Carolina’s first-ever win at the Entertainment and Sports Arena… The Hurricanes were 1-0-1 against Washington at the Entertainment and Sports Arena, and 0-2-1 at the MCI Center…The Hurricanes are 24-41-10 all-time vs. the Capitals with a 13-18-7 record at home.

CAROLINA NOTES: After registering just one hat trick all of last season, the Carolina Hurricanes tallied two hat tricks during the 200-01 preseason…Defenseman Kevin Hatcher, who has registered two regular season hat tricks in his career, found the net three times during the Hurricanes’ preseason opener, a 5-4 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning…On Sept. 27, Shane Willis scored three times in the first period against Washington Capitals goaltender Craig Billington in the first ever preseason match-up at the Entertainment and Sports Arena…Several of the Hurricanes’ newest faces made quite an impact during the preseason… Sandis Ozolinsh (1g, 6a) led the team this preseason with seven points… Willis (3g, 3a) tied for second in preseason scoring with team captain Ron Francis (1g, 5a) with six points…Hatcher (3g, 2a) tied forward Bates Battaglia (4g, 1a) for fourth with five points.

WASHINGTON NOTES: After a tremendous turnaround during the regular season last year to finish second overall in the Eastern Conference last season, the Washington Capitals were knocked out of the first round of the 2000 Stanley Cup Playoffs by the Pittsburgh Penguins… The Capitals were led by goaltender Olaf Kolzig, who captured the Vezina Trophy as the NHL’s top backstopper after posting a 33-7-5 record in his final 45 starts of the season, including a 1.92 goals against average and .931 save percentage…Kolzig underwent knee surgery Sept. 26 and will miss the first three to four weeks of the regular season….Adam Oates led the Capitals in scoring with 71 points (15g, 56a) during the 1999-2000 season…Capitals tough guy Chris Simon, who led the team with 29 goals last season, remains unsigned.
