TRACKING THE STORYLINES:
Bounce Back On Deck:Saturday night was the then-first place Canes met the then-last place Devils in the second half of a home-road back-to-back for Carolina. Said post-game by both Head Coach Rod Brind'Amour and defenseman Brady Skjei, it was not one of the team's better performances on the season. The team departed Newark after a 7-4 defeat, despite going ahead 2-0 in the game's first 5:44. They'll look to get back on track tonight.
Keep The Good Starts Going:As mentioned above the team's start Saturday night in Jersey was strong, getting goals from both Andrei Svechnikov and Ian Cole in the early going. Strong starts have been crucial for the team as of late, but not just on the offensive side of things. Friday night against New York they held the Rangers to just four shots in the first period. Three days prior in Boston the club put up a five spot in the opening 20 minutes. While clearly it does not always indicate a victory, it sure is a great way to get a game underway.
Scorching Svech:Speaking of Andrei Svechnikov, he enters tonight's contest with four consecutive multi-point games. Dating back to Saturday, January 15 and the team's 4-1 victory over the Vancouver Canucks, Svech has posted two points in every game that his team has played. He enters tonight with 34 points in 35 games played on the year.
Aho The All-Star:Svechnikov's 34 points rank second rank second on the club, only behind Sebastian Aho, who has 42 points in 35 contests. He'll take on Vegas tonight and travel there again next week for the 2022 Honda NHL All-Star Game. Thus far in his career he has seven points in six games against Vegas.
Brotherly Love:Canes defenseman Brendan Smith will take on his brother Reilly tonight, who plays for the Golden Knights. It will be the 20th time in their careers they'll go head-to-head in the regular season.
