DEFENSEMAN DICIPLINED FOR CROSS-CHECK IN GAME 4
DETROIT (June 11, 2002) – Detroit Red Wings defenseman Jiri Fischer has been suspended for Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Finals for cross-checking Carolina Hurricanes forward Tommy Westlund, the National Hockey League announced today.
"Mr. Fischer's suspension was based on the fact that he delivered an intentional cross-check to the face of the Carolina player," said Colin Campbell, NHL Executive Vice President and Director of Hockey Operations. "There was nothing about this event that could be deemed related to the play."
The incident occurred at 7:44 of the third period of Game 4 Monday night. No penalty was called on the play.
