Carolina forward will miss Game 2 vs. Montreal
RALEIGH, NC (May. 4, 2002) – The National Hockey League announced Saturday that it has suspended Carolina Hurricanes forward Jeff O’Neill for one game because of his checking from behind major penalty on Montreal Canadiens defenseman Sheldon Souray in the first period of Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals Friday night at the Entertainment & Sports Arena.
O’Neill was given a game misconduct on the play, which occurred at 4:34 of the first period. O’Neill will sit out Game 2 of the series, which Carolina leads 1-0, Sunday night at 7:30 at the ESA.
“We had hoped this would not have warranted a suspension,” said Jim Rutherford, Carolina’s Chief Executive Officer and General Manager. “It happened early in the game and Jeff sat out what was nearly a full game with his game misconduct. We hope the Montreal player is not injured.”
