by Staff Writer / Carolina Hurricanes

PRACTICES HELD IN RALEIGH AND FT. MYERS, FL

RALEIGH, NC (Sept. 12, 2001) - Because of the tragedies in New York, Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania, the Carolina Hurricanes will again hold practices in both Raleigh and Ft. Myers, FL for their 2001-02 Training Camp on Thursday.

There are 20 players currently participating in the team’s training camp who are currently in Ft. Myers. The remaining 33 players participating in training camp were scheduled to fly on a chartered flight from Raleigh to Ft. Myers on Tuesday at 1 p.m. That flight was canceled when the Federal Aviation Administration suspended all flights due to the attacks on the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. The team had been scheduled to begin practice with the full 53-man Training Camp roster in Ft. Myers on Wednesday.

The Hurricanes are holding two sessions of practices for the 33 players who are in Raleigh on Thursday, taking place at 8:30 a.m. and 10 a.m. at the RecZone in Raleigh. Hurricanes Head Coach Paul Maurice and his staff will run the Raleigh sessions. The 20 players in Florida will practice at TECO Arena in Ft. Myers at 10 a.m. with Ron Smith, the coach of the Hurricanes’ American Hockey League affiliate Lowell Lock Monsters and Hurricanes goaltending consultant Don Edwards. The team still plans to hold its full Training Camp in Ft. Myers and will continue to monitor the situation to determine an appropriate course of action and flight time.

For more information on the camp, contact Jerry Higgins at (919) 523-1706 or Mike Sundheim at (919) 861-5477.
