by Staff Writer / Carolina Hurricanes
RALEIGH, NC (Aug. 1, 2001) – Jason Karmanos, Vice President and Assistant General Manager of the Carolina Hurricanes, today announced the signing of defenseman Marek Malik to a two-year contract. As per club policy, no other terms were released.

Malik, 26, and the Hurricanes were scheduled to go to arbitration on Saturday, Aug. 4 in Toronto. Malik, a Group II free agent, is coming off his sixth NHL season where he set career highs in games played (61), points (20), goals (6) and assists (14).

“We’re pleased to settle with Marek prior to arbitration on a two-year deal,” Karmanos said. “Marek showed great potential in the second half of last season. We expect him to build off it in the future.”

Malik was a healthy scratch for 15 games last season. He suffered whiplash during the final preseason game at Washington and missed the first six games of the season.

Malik (6’5”, 235 lbs.) was drafted with the organization’s second pick in the 1991 NHL Entry Draft (72nd pick overall). The Ostrava, Czech. native has 13 goals, 39 assists and 187 penalty minutes in 225 NHL games.
