Press Release: HURRICANES RE-SIGN BRAD DEFAUW TO TWO-YEAR DEAL

FORWARD SPENT LAST SEASON WITH LOWELL OF AHL

RALEIGH, N.C. (July 24, 2002) – Jason Karmanos, Vice President and Assistant General Manager of the Eastern Conference champion Carolina Hurricanes, today announced the team has signed forward Brad Defauw (duh-FAW) to a two-year contract.

Defauw (6’2’’, 220 lbs.) spent all of last season with the Hurricanes’ top minor league affiliate in Lowell of the American Hockey League (AHL). Defauw, 24, was Lowell’s fifth-leading scorer in 2001-02, tallying 38 points (17g, 21a) in 63 games. He notched three points (2g, 1a) in five postseason games for the Lock Monsters. The Edina, Minn. native played his first professional season in 2000-01 with Cincinnati of the International Hockey League (IHL). He tallied 51 points (20g, 31a) in 82 games for the Cyclones.

Defauw played college hockey at the University of North Dakota, where he captured National Championships with the Fighting Sioux in 1997 and 2000. He totaled 78 points (40g, 38a) during his four-year collegiate career.
