RALEIGH, NC (July 27, 2001) – Jim Rutherford, Chief Executive Officer and General Manager of the Carolina Hurricanes, today announced the team has signed left wing Bates Battaglia to a two-year contract. As per club policy, contract details were not announced.

The two sides avoided an arbitration hearing in Toronto on Wednesday, Aug. 1. Battaglia, 25, a Group II free agent, is coming off a season that saw him play in 80 games with 12 goals, 15 assists and 76 penalty minutes.

“We’re pleased to have Bates under contract,” Rutherford said. “We expect big things from him in the future. We believe he’ll grow into the all-around player we expect.”

The Mighty Ducks of Anaheim originally drafted Battaglia in the sixth round of the 1994 NHL Entry Draft. He was traded to the Hurricanes along with a fourth-round draft pick in 1998 (which turned out to be Josef Vasicek) for Mark Janssens on March 18, 1997.

Battaglia, who will be entering his fifth NHL season, has 37 goals and 48 assists in 250 games.
