GAME DAY:

The Carolina Hurricanes begin a four-game road trip Tuesday against the Atlanta Thrashers at Philips Arena. The Hurricanes are one point ahead of the Boston Bruins, with a game in hand, for the eighth, and final, Eastern Conference playoff berth. The Hurricanes are 10-13-4-3 on the road this season, while the Thrashers are 9-15-3-2 at home.

CAROLINA / ATLANTA SERIES:

The Hurricanes and the Thrashers meet for the fourth of five meetings this season. Carolina won the first three contests, defeating Atlanta at Philips Arena 5-3 on Dec. 6 and 3-1 on Feb. 1, as well as defeating the Thrashers 6-3 on Feb. 21 at the Entertainment and Sports Arena. The two teams meet for the final time April 6 in Raleigh. Rookie right winger Shane Willis leads Carolina in the season series vs. Atlanta with three goals, three assists and a plus-5 rating, including his first career hat trick in the teams’ last meeting. The Hurricanes defeated the expansion Thrashers in all five meetings last season. The Hurricanes are 8-0-0-0 all-time against Atlanta, 4-0 at Philips Arena.

CAROLINA NOTES:

Hurricanes center Rod Brind’Amour (9g, 17a) has 26 points in the last 22 games and has points in 15 of his last 18 games (5g, 16a). Carolina winger Jeff O’Neill has 35 points in his last 35 games (24g, 11a), scoring goals in 18 of those games. Right winger Shane Willis leads NHL rookies in goals (18), power-play goals (8), game-winning goals (5) and is second in points (37), shots (136) and power-play points (16). Goaltender Arturs Irbe has started 47 of the last 49 games.

The Thrashers, the fourth-place team in the Southeast Division, are coming off a 0-5 road trip and have won just three times in their last 26 games (3-19-3-1). RW Donald Audette is Atlanta’s leading scorer this season with 66 points (29g, 37a) in 57 games. He leads the Thrashers with four goals and one assist against Carolina this season.
