GAME NIGHT:
The Carolina Hurricanes play their first of set of back-to-back games this season as they meet the New York Islanders at 7:00 p.m. at the Entertainment & Sports Arena on Wednesday and a 7 p.m. at Nassau Coliseum on Thursday. The Hurricanes went on the road for the first time Saturday night and defeated the Atlanta Thrashers 4-2 thanks to a four-point night by left winger Jeff O’Neill. Sami Kapanen (4g, 2a) is tied with O’Neill (4g, 4a) as Carolina’s leading goal scorer. O’Neill leads the team in points and Ron Francis (0g, 7a) is second.

CAROLINA NOTES:
Hurricanes forward Sami Kapanen carries a five-game point streak and a three-game goal streak into Wednesday’s game. Kapanen’s streak is the longest by a Carolina player to start the season since Keith Primeau’s seven-game streak in 1998-99 (Oct. 10-25, 4g, 4a). The longest streak to start the season in franchise history is 11 games by Ron Francis in 1984-85 (Oct. 11-31, 6g, 8a).

CAROLINA / NY ISLANDERS SERIES:
The Carolina Hurricanes and the New York Islanders meet Wednesday for the first of four match-ups this season. The Hurricanes won the regular season series last season against the Islanders with a record of 3-1-0. Carolina was 2-0 at the Entertainment & Sports Arena, winning 5-2 on Jan. 7 and 2-1 on March 18. Carolina beat New York at Nassau Coliseum 3-1 on March 1 and lost in their first visit to Long Island on Dec. 19, 2000 by a 2-1 score. Shane Willis led the Hurricanes with five assists, while Rod Brind’Amour had four goals, including his second career hat trick, on Jan. 7. Carolina is 36-32-9 all-time against the Islanders, 20-14-5 at home.

NY ISLANDERS NOTES:
The New York Islanders are off to a stellar start to the 2001-02 season with a slew of new names in the lineup. The Islanders won their first four games of the season before falling in overtime to the Detroit Red Wings. New faces Shawn Bates (2g, 5a), Michael Peca (2g, 4a) and Alexei Yashin (4g, 1a) have made an immediate impact on the offense. Waiver draft selection Chris Osgood has been solid in net for New York with a 3-1-0 record and a 2.48 goals against average. The Islanders are unbeaten on the road this season and are tied for first in the NHL in power play percentage (28.0%)
