GAME NIGHT

The defending Eastern Conference champion Carolina Hurricanes host the New Jersey Devils for the first time this season at RBC Center in a meeting of the last two Eastern Conference champions. The Hurricanes and Devils last met in Game 6 of the 2002 Eastern Conference quarterfinals at Continental Airlines Arena in New Jersey. Carolina earned a 1-0 victory in the game and a 4-2 victory in the series to move into the second round of the playoffs for just the second time in franchise history.
The Hurricanes fell to the Washington Capitals 2-1 on Thursday night at RBC Center and are winless in their last three games (0-2-0-1). Jeff O’Neill extended his assist and point streaks to four games (0g, 4a) with an assist on a power-play goal by Ron Francis in the game. Kevin Weekes has started two consecutive games in net for Carolina and has stopped 52 of 56 shots for a save percentage of .929 in the two losses.

CAROLINA / NEW JERSEY NOTES
The Hurricanes and the Devils meet for the first of four games this season. The two teams have met in the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals each of the last two years, with the Devils defeating the Hurricanes four games to two in 2001 en route to the Eastern Conference championship and the Hurricanes defeating the Devils four games to two on their way to the Eastern Conference title. Bates Battaglia (1g, 2a), Ron Francis (1g, 2a) and Jaroslav Svoboda (0g, 3a) were the leading scorers for Carolina in the 2002 Eastern Conference Quarterfinal series against the Devils, and goaltender Kevin Weekes was 2-0 with a 1.17 goals against average and a .964 save percentage in the series. Patrik Elias (2g, 4a) led all scorers in the series.
The Devils won the 2002-02 regular season series 2-1-1. New Jersey defeated Carolina in both games in Raleigh, topping Carolina 2-1 on Jan. 5 and 3-2 on April 3. Carolina overcame a two-goal third period deficit to earn a 3-3 tie at New Jersey on Jan. 21. The Hurricanes defeated the Devils 4-2 at the Continental Airlines Arena on March 23. The Hurricanes are 31-37-12-1 all-time against the Devils in the regular season, including a 17-15-8-0 record at home and a 15-21-4-1 mark on the road.

DEVILS NOTES
The New Jersey Devils are off to a 2-0 start, earning victories against the Ottawa Senators (2-1) and the Columbus Blue Jackets (3-2) in their first two games. New Jersey has allowed just one power play goal in 10 chances this year and is ranked fourth in the league in penalty kill percentage (90.9%). Devils netminder Martin Brodeur has stopped 54 of 57 shots (.944 SV%) in New Jersey’s first two games. The Devils host the Nashville Predators Friday, Oct. 18 at 7:35 p.m.
