GAME NIGHT

The defending Eastern Conference champion Carolina Hurricanes host the Chicago Blackhawks in the only match-up this season between Carolina and Chicago. The Hurricanes fell to the Ottawa Senators 4-1 in their most recent game, Wednesday night at Corel Centre. Jeff O’Neill extended his assist and point streaks to seven games (1g, 7a) with an assist on Ron Francis’ goal against the Senators. O’Neill has now matched his career high point-streak, set during the 2000-01 season when he had 10 points (5g, 5a) in seven games. He has set a new career high for assist streak. His previous high was four games in 2001-02 (1/21-1/26: 1g, 4a). Through games of Oct. 24, O’Neill had the longest assist and point streaks in the NHL this season. With his goal at Ottawa, Hurricanes captain Ron Francis tied Dale Hawerchuk for 24th on the NHL’s all-time goals scored list. Francis has scored four goals through eight games this season. Last season, he did not record his fourth goal until Nov. 30, the 29th game of the season.

CAROLINA NOTES
Rod Brind’Amour tallied goals in each of the Hurricanes first three games this season and is tied for second on the team in scoring with six points (5g, 1a). He scored Carolina’s first shorthanded goal of the season on Oct. 19 against New Jersey (10/19). Brind’Amour notched his first multi-point night of the season with a goal and an assist against Atlanta on Oct. 11. The 32-year-old center had 11 multi-point games for the Hurricanes in 2001-02, and was fourth on the team in scoring with 55 points (23g, 32a). Brind’Amour, who was second in the league in faceoff percentage in 2001-02 (59.2%), is currently fifth in the league in faceoff percentage (62.4%) through Oct. 24.

CAROLINA / CHICAGO NOTES
The Hurricanes and the Blackhawks meet for their only match-up this season. Carolina defeated Chicago in their meeting in 2001-02. The Hurricanes defeated the Blackhawks 2-1 in overtime at the United Center. Sean Hill led all Hurricanes scorers with two points (1g, 1a). Chicago leads the all-time regular season series with Carolina 28-23-6. The Hurricanes are 14-12-3-0 at home, while the Blackhawks lead the series in Chicago 16-9-3.

BLACKHAWKS NOTES
The Blackhawks fell to the Wild, 3-2 Thursday night at United Center. Chicago has yet to win a game on the road in 2002-03. The Blackhawks dropped their first road game, 2-1 at Columbus. Left Wing Sergei Berezin is the Blackhawks’ leading goal scorer (2g, 2a). Berezin has scored two power-play goals in five games for Chicago. Center Alexei Zhamnov is tied for third in the NHL through games of Oct. 24 with longest point streak. Zhamnov has notched six points (1g, 5a) in five games.
