The Carolina Hurricanes open the 2001-02 season Friday night against the New York Rangers at the Entertainment & Sports Arena. Carolina completed the 2001 preseason with a 2-4 record. The Hurricanes are 5-12-5 all-time in season openers and 8-8-6 in home openers. The franchise has a 3-4-4 record when opening the season with a home game, and is unbeaten in the last five games it’s opened the season at home (2-0-3). Carolina is 2-0 in home openers against the New York Rangers, defeating New York 8-2 on Oct. 12, 1985 and 2-0 on Oct. 7, 1995. The Carolina Hurricanes selected center Josh Holden from the Vancouver Canucks in the NHL Waiver Draft on Sept. 28. Holden (6’1’’, 200 lbs.) split last season between Vancouver and Kansas City of the International Hockey League. He scored one goal in 10 games with the Canucks. Holden notched 53 points (27g, 26a) and 136 penalty minutes in 60 games with Kansas City. Holden, 23, has totaled 13 points (4g, 9a) and 12 penalty minutes in 46 career NHL games. Holden was the Canucks’ first round selection, 12th overall, in the 1996 NHL Entry Draft. In four seasons with Regina of the Western Hockey League, he had 352 points (167g, 185a) in 246 games.

The Carolina Hurricanes and the New York Rangers meet Friday night for the first of four matches this season. Carolina defeated New York in last year’s season series 3-1-0, knocking off the Rangers twice at Madison Square Garden and splitting the games in Raleigh. Rod Brind’Amour led all scorers in last year’s season series with seven points (2g, 5a) in four games. Martin Gelinas and Jeff O’Neill each notched three goals against the Rangers in 2000-01.
NEW YORK NOTES:
Several players will be making their Rangers debut tonight, including Eric Lindros, Bryan Berard, Zdeno Ciger, Andreas Johansson, Igor Ulanov, and former Hurricane David Karpa. The Rangers posted a 4-4-1 mark in nine pre-season matches, including a 3-0-0 mark at Madison Square Garden. Radek Dvorak led the team in scoring during the pre-season, tallying three goals and six assists for nine points in seven matches. Off-season acquisition Zdeno Ciger ranked second in scoring, registering three goals and five assists for eight points in seven games, while Eric Lindros skated in six games, collecting two goals and one assist for three points.
