RALEIGH, NC (September 17, 2000) - Defensemen Sandis Ozolinsh and Kevin Hatcher provided an immediate impact for the Carolina Hurricanes by accounting for four of the team’s five goals in a 5-4 preseason victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning at TECO Arena in Fort Myers, Florida on Saturday night. The two teams conclude their home-at-home series with a re-match on Sunday night at the Ice Palace in Tampa Bay.

Ozolinsh, acquired from the Colorado Avalanche on June 24th, finished with four points (1g, 3a) while Hatcher tallied three goals including the game-tying goal and the game-winner in the decisive third period. Signed as a free agent on July 31, Hatcher notched a hat trick after scoring four goals in 74 games last season with the New York Rangers. Team captain Ron Francis added three assists, including two helpers in the third period, as the Hurricanes overcame three one-goal deficits.

With the Hurricanes trailing 1-0 early in the first period, forward Bates Battaglia scored the team’s first goal of the preseason after jamming home a rebound in the slot at the 3:09 mark. Carolina converted its first power-play goal of the preseason when Hatcher scored with 1:03 remaining in the first period to tie the game at 2-2.

Carolina opened the second period with its first lead of the game as Ozolinsh collected a power-play goal at the 7:10 mark. Carolina finished the night 3-for-10 (30.0%) on the power-play and 11-for-13 (84.6%) in the game that featured 29 penalties. After Tampa’s Wayne Primeau recorded consecutive goals in the second in third periods, Hatcher responded with an even-strength goal at the 7:49 mark of the third period and the game-winning goal on the power-play with under eight minutes remaining in the game. Arturs Irbe, who established franchise single season records in games, minutes and wins last year, posted 23 saves in his preseason debut.
