WASHINGTONRiley Nash has been sidelined with a concussion, Carolina Hurricanes head coach Bill Peters said on Tuesday morning.

In a fairly routine segment of warm-ups before Sunday’s game against Boston, Nash was along the side of the net when a puck was tipped and struck him around the right ear. Nash required stitches and was a late scratch. Video of the incident can be seen here at the 13 second mark.

“Hopefully it’s not a severe concussion, but with those you never know,” Peters said. “We’ll just monitor that day-to-day, and he’ll go through the protocol.”

Many, but not all, Hurricanes players wear helmets during warm-ups. Nash is among those who wear a helmet, but the area around the ear remains exposed.

“Nothing you can do. It’s just one of those things. A freak accident, and it’s just unfortunate,” Peters said. “It’s never a good time, and hopefully it’s nothing that keeps him out the rest of the year.”

Nash did not make the trip to Washington and Florida with the team.
