FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE—Jan. 23, 2007
RALEIGH, NC—Chris Diamond, Manager of Community Relations for the Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has partnered with the Danialle Karmanos Work It Out Program and Communities in Schools of Wake County (CIS Wake) to bring the Work It Out Program to the Hurricanes Academy at Walnut Terrace. Danialle Karmanos, wife of Hurricanes owner Peter Karmanos, and the Carolina Hurricanes will host a kick-off to the program on Thursday, Jan. 25, at 2 p.m. at the Hurricanes Academy. Hurricanes players Erik Cole and Glen Wesley will take part in the event, which is open to the media.
The Danialle Karmanos' Work it Out program (DKWIO) is a comprehensive program dedicated to the mental, physical and emotional well-being of children. The program utilizes a basic formula for each of the weekly, hour-long sessions devoted to providing at-risk children the necessary tools, options and information they need to make healthy choices. Specific program elements are dedicated to nutrition, exercise and wellness through fun, engaging and educational activities. “To date, hundreds of children in the metropolitan Detroit area have participated in the growing program and that is what we hope to bring to the children of the Triangle region of North Carolina”
said Danialle Karmanos.
The Hurricanes Academy is an after school learning center operated by CIS Wake and located in Walnut Terrace, one of Raleigh’s largest public housing areas. The center is located at 111 W. Lee Street. Staff members of the Carolina Hurricanes will join Danialle Karmanos and the Detroit-based DKWIO staff at Thursday’s kick-off event.
