HURRICANES UNIVERSITY SPRING SEMESTER BEGINS FEB. 10

FACULTY TO OFFER INSTRUCTION INCLUDES HURRICANES FORWARDS JEFF O’NEILL, BATES BATTAGLIA AND TOMMY WESTLUND

RALEIGH, NC – Hurricanes University, a three-night study session for fans to learn more about the coolest game on earth, starts its spring semester on Thursday, February 10, 2000 at the Ice House in Cary, North Carolina at 7:00 p.m. In its second year of existence, Hurricanes University offers fans the unique opportunity to participate in both on-ice fundamentals and classroom instruction from the team’s coaches, players, broadcasters and staff.

Session #1 begins on Thursday, February 10, with the basics of skating. During the first 30 minutes, all students will be taught the techniques of skating with provided ice skates and helmets. Following a 10-minute break, Hurricanes players Jeff O’Neill, Bates Battaglia and Tommy Westlund will demonstrate how to stick handle, pass and shoot. A short Question and Answer session conducted by the players will conclude the first session.

Session #2 takes place on Wednesday, February 16, 7:00 p.m. at the Ramada Inn Blue Ridge in Raleigh. It will include a light dinner just before class begins. The instructors for this class will be Hurricanes television play-by-play announcer/radio analyst John Forslund and guest members of the Hurricanes equipment staff. This two-hour session will be used to teach students the basic rules and regulations of the game, along with conference alignments, rule changes, reading box scores and scoresheets, and video demonstration.

The program concludes with Graduation Day scheduled for Saturday, February 19. This is the final session of the program, and participants will receive tickets to the Hurricanes home game against the Tampa Bay Lightning at the Entertainment and Sports Arena. “Ron the Ref” will be available before the game to answer any special questions about the rules of hockey and then all students will participate in a graduation ceremony during the second intermission. Hurricanes staff and participants will be wearing black caps and gowns, and participants will receive diplomas one-by-one and receive a special Hurricanes “U” T-shirt.
