Franchise’s Only Radio Play-by-Play Man Celebrates 25 SeasonsRALEIGH, N.C. (March 4, 2004)
– Matt West, Vice President of Corporate Sales and Marketing for the Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team will honor radio play-by-play man Chuck Kaiton
at the RBC Center prior to Saturday’s game against the New Jersey Devils. Kaiton, who is in his 25th season of calling NHL action, has been the franchise’s only radio play-by-play voice since it joined the NHL prior to the 1979-80 season.
Fans are encouraged to arrive early for Saturday’s game to enjoy a video tribute to Kaiton and join Hurricanes management, coaches, players and staff in recognizing Kaiton during an on-ice ceremony. Before the puck drops, a banner honoring Kaiton will be unveiled in front of his radio booth.
Kaiton began his broadcasting career while attending the University of Michigan, covering and announcing Wolverines sports for the student radio station. After graduating, Kaiton joined WAAN in Ann Arbor covering high school football and hockey. In 1975, he made the move to Madison, Wisc., where he covered the University of Wisconsin Badgers and, in 1979, was named Wisconsin Sportscaster of the Year prior to joining the Hartford Whalers. Since then, Kaiton has called all but one Whalers/Hurricanes game, a January 1992 match up he missed to attend his father’s funeral. In 1986, he was named President of the NHL Broadcasters Association, a position he holds to this day.
Tickets for Saturday’s game and all remaining Hurricanes home games are available via the Dodge Box Office at the RBC Center, all TicketMaster locations or by calling TicketMaster at 919-834-4000. For further ticket information, please skate to www.CarolinaHurricanes.com.
