HURRICANES SKATE TO 1-1 TIE WITH ATLANTA

by Staff Writer / Carolina Hurricanes
ATLANTA (FEB. 27, 2001) -- The Atlanta Thrashers earned their first ever point against the Carolina Hurricanes at Philips Arena as the teams skated to a 1-1 tie. Atlanta captain Steve Staios netted the game-winner with 2:01 left in regulation.

Carolina goaltender Arturs Irbe warded off shot after shot through the first 57:59 of the game. Irbe finished the game with 43 saves, a Hurricanes season high, and earned first star honors.

Staois scored when the puck fired from behind the Carolina goal and onto his stick. Irbe had made a save seconds before and it appeared as though the puck would be cleared by the Carolina defense. With the right side of the net open, Staois scored his eighth goal of the season.

In the ensuing overtime period, Hurricanes rookie wingman Shane Willis had two scoring chances, both of which Atlanta goaltender Norm Maracle nullified. Maracle's 28 saves earned him second star honors.

Carolina's leading goal scorer and road points leader Jeff O'Neill notched his 31st tally of the season at 9:47 of the second period. A patient Sami Kapanen skated the puck into the slot and captain Ron Francis created a bit of space for O'Neill to get open. O'Neill beat Maracle stick side.

The tie marks the first time the Thrashers have earned a point in the standings against the Hurricanes. Atlanta's all-time record against Carolina is 0-8-1-0 with one game remaining this season, April 6 in Raleigh.

NOTES: Carolina forward Darren Langdon returned to the lineup at Atlanta after missing nine games with a groin injury… O'Neill ranks tied for 10th place among all NHL players in goals scored… Defenseman Dave Karpa missed the game due to a bruised inner oblique.
