RALEIGH, NC (August 1, 2000) – Jim Rutherford, CEO and General Manager of the National Hockey League Carolina Hurricanes, announced today the team has signed forwards Bates Battaglia and Sandy McCarthy and defenseman Steve Halko. As per club policy, no terms were released.
“These signings further solidify our roster as we head into next season,” stated Rutherford. “Bates and Steve have made steady progress in their professional careers, and we expect them to be an important part of our team. Sandy is a veteran who adds a physical dimension to our team.”
Battaglia (6’2’’, 205 lbs.) established career highs in 1999-2000 with the Hurricanes in goals (16), assists (18), points (34), games played (77), and penalty minutes (39). The 24-year-old Chicago native led the team with a (+20) rating and a 18.6% shooting percentage in his third NHL season. Battaglia ranked fifth on the Hurricanes in goals and ninth in points. He posted a career-high, four-game point streak (2g, 3a) from November 11-19 and was named the Hurricanes' Big Sky Beef Player of the Month for November. Originally drafted by the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim in the sixth round (132nd overall) of the 1994 NHL Entry Draft, Battaglia was acquired by the Hurricanes on March 18, 1997 along with a fourth-round draft pick in 1998 (Josef Vasicek) in exchange for Mark Janssens. A former standout at Lake Superior State University, Battaglia has totaled 58 points (25g, 33a) and 71 penalty minutes in 170 career NHL games.
McCarthy (6’3’’, 225 lbs.) completed his first season with Carolina in 1999-2000 after being acquired from the Philadelphia Flyers on March 14 in exchange for Kent Manderville. Originally from Toronto, McCarthy collected 11 points (6g, 5a) in 71 games with Carolina and Philadelphia, ranking first on the Hurricanes with 120 penalty minutes. McCarthy, 28, played in 13 games with Carolina, totaling nine penalty minutes and a +2 rating. Originally drafted by the Calgary Flames with their third choice (52nd overall) in the 1991 NHL Entry Draft, McCarthy has tallied 84 points (41g, 43a) and 1,081 penalty minutes in 441 NHL games with the Flames, Lightning, Flyers, and Hurricanes.
Halko (6’1’’, 200 lbs.) completed his third NHL season last year, playing in 58 games with the Hurricanes and notching eight points (0g, 8a) and 25 penalty minutes. Drafted by the organization in the 10th round (225th overall) of the 1992 NHL Entry Draft, Halko has totaled 13 points (0g, 13a) and 59 penalty minutes in 96 games with the Hurricanes over three seasons.
