DeFauw injured in Saturday’s game against Los Angeles

RALEIGH, N.C. – Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the Carolina Hurricanes, announced today that the team has recalled center Damian Surma and left wing Tomas Kurka from Lowell of the American Hockey League. Surma and Kurka will be available for the Hurricanes’ game Tuesday against Ottawa at the RBC Center (7 p.m., Fox SportsNet). Hurricanes left wing Brad DeFauw suffered a lacerated elbow in Saturday night’s game against the Los Angeles Kings and is day-to-day.

Surma (5’ 10’’, 200 lbs.) was selected by Carolina in the sixth round, 174th overall, in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft and has yet to make his NHL debut. The Lincoln Park, Mich., native is in his first full professional season after making his professional debut with Lowell at the conclusion of the 2001-02 campaign, playing in one regular-season game and four playoff games. Surma, 22, has 20 points (9g, 11a) in 64 games with Lowell this season. In four seasons with Plymouth of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), Surma tallied 225 points (105g, 120a) and 306 penalty minutes in 241 games.

Kurka played for Carolina in Saturday night’s game against Los Angeles and then was reassigned to the Lock Monsters, where he scored a pair of goals in a 2-2 tie on Sunday against Norfolk. Kurka (5’ 11”, 190 lbs.) was selected by Carolina in the second round, 32nd overall, in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft, and has played seven NHL games. He scored his first NHL goal in his first NHL game, Feb. 26 at Phoenix. In 58 games with Lowell this season, Kurka, 21, has 16 goals and 11 assists (27 points) and ranks tied for fifth on the team in scoring. A native of Most, Czech Republic, Kurka turned professional last season and had 13 goals and 15 assists (28 points) in 71 regular-season games with Lowell. He played two seasons with Plymouth of the Ontario Hockey League prior to turning professional and totaled 108 points (51 goals, 57 assists) in 111 regular-season games.
