RALEIGH, NC – Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager for the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that goaltender Cam Ward
has been recalled from Lowell of the American Hockey League, returning from a weekend conditioning stint. Netminder Kevin Nastiuk has been reassigned to Lowell, Carolina’s top minor-league affiliate.
Ward, 21, started a pair of games for Lowell over the weekend, going 0-2 with a 2.54 goals-against average and a .915 save percentage. Ward last started a game for Carolina at Phoenix on Dec. 3. The NHL rookie has played in 13 of Carolina’s 32 games and posts a 6-3-1 record, a 4.05 goals-against average and an .865 save percentage. Ward (6’ 1”, 200 lbs.) played his first professional season in 2004-05 with Lowell and finished the season with a 27-17-3 record in 50 games. The Sherwood Park, Alb., native ranked first among all AHL goaltenders in save percentage and set new Lock Monsters single-season records with 27 wins, six shutouts, a 1.99 goals-against average and a .937 save percentage.
Nastiuk, 20, served as backup to Martin Gerber for the Hurricanes’ games against Columbus and New Jersey last week. He has a 1-5-2 record in eight games for the Lock Monsters this season with a 3.27 goals-against average and a .902 save percentage.
The Carolina Hurricanes continue a five-game home stand on Tuesday against Tampa Bay (7 p.m., FSN South, Hurricanes Radio Network). The Hurricanes are unbeaten on the home stand, having defeated Chicago, Columbus and New Jersey last week to improve their season record to 21-9-2, the second-best record in the Eastern Conference. Fans who donate a new or gently worn, laundered winter hat, scarf or gloves to the Goodwill Community Foundation prior to Tuesday’s contest will receive a two-for-one ticket voucher for lower level or club level tickets to the game. The Hurricanes conclude the home stand against Florida on Friday (7 p.m., Hurricanes Radio Network).
