RALEIGH, NC – Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has recalled forward Brett Sutter on an emergency basis from the Charlotte Checkers of the American Hockey League (AHL).

This marks the first recall to Carolina for the 23-year-old Sutter, who was acquired by the Hurricanes from Calgary on Nov. 17 along with Ian White. The Viking, Alb., native began the 2010-11 season with the Flames, and earned one assist in four games before being assigned to Calgary’s AHL affiliate Abbotsford. Sutter (6’0”, 200 lbs.) has scored seven goals and earned seven assists (14 points) in 33 AHL games with the Checkers since the trade.

Sutter has appeared in NHL games with Calgary in each of the past three seasons, totaling one goal, one assist (2 points) and 12 penalty minutes in 18 career games. He was drafted by Calgary in the sixth round, 179th overall, in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft. Brett Sutter is the older cousin of Hurricanes alternate captain Brandon Sutter.
