Defenseman to join Carolina on Monday


RALEIGH, NC Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League's Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that defenseman Anton Babchuk has been recalled from the Lowell Lock Monsters of the American Hockey League. Babchuk will join Carolina on Monday and be available for the team's game on Tuesday against the New York Rangers at the RBC Center.

Babchuk, 21, is currently in his third professional season in North America. He was acquired by Carolina via trade on Jan. 20 and has posted two goals in 10 games with the Hurricanes. Prior to the trade, he split the year between Chicago (NHL) and Norfolk (AHL). In 17 games with Chicago, he registered five points (2g, 3a) and 16 penalty minutes, scoring his first NHL goal on Dec. 15 at Nashville. In five games with the Lock Monsters, the Kiev, Ukraine, native has notched one goal and added three assists (4 points), and he has totaled six goals and 10 assists (16 points) in 29 AHL games this season with Lowell and Norfolk.

The Carolina Hurricanes return to the RBC Center on Tuesday to face the New York Rangers (7 p.m., FSN South, Hurricanes Radio Network).
