by Staff Writer / Carolina Hurricanes

BENEFIT HOCKEY GAME DEC. 1 AT RECZONE

RALEIGH, NC (Nov. 25, 2001) - The Carolina Hurricanes, the United States Secret Service and the Raleigh Police Department will combine their efforts in raising money for the family of Secret Service Master Special Officer Craig J. Miller of Virginia, who died in the World Trade Center tragedy of Sept. 11, 2001.

Hockey teams featuring members of the United States Secret Service will play a team from the Raleigh Police Department in a benefit game on Saturday, Dec. 1 at 8 p.m. at the RecZone (912 Hodges Road, Raleigh). Tickets are $10 and will be available at the door the night of the game. A maximum of 300 tickets will be sold to the event. All of the money will be donated to Miller’s widow, Holly, and the family’s four children: Robby, 10; Cody, 9; and twins Curt and Colton (8 months).

Carolina Hurricanes forward Jeff O’Neill will be the honorary coach of the Secret Service team, while Hurricanes defenseman Aaron Ward will coach the police squad. John Forslund, the television voice of the Hurricanes, will emcee the game, while his broadcast partner, Tripp Tracy, will play goal for the Raleigh PD. Stormy, the Carolina Hurricanes mascot, will also be in attendance. A raffle for Hurricanes items will also take place during the game.

“We sincerely appreciate the participation and support of the Carolina Hurricanes and the Raleigh Police Department in working with the Secret Service to raise funds to benefit Master Special Officer Craig Miller’s family,” said Secret Service Director Brian Stafford. “Although the Secret Service will never forget the tragic events of September 11th, we remain inspired by the spirit of the American people that is symbolized in events such as this.”

The game came about when the Secret Service and Raleigh PD were looking to play a hockey game against each other before the Sept. 11 tragedy occurred. Playing the game and having all monies go to Officer Miller’s family to help offset expenses was a natural.

Sponsors of the game include the RecZone, Comfort Suites hotel and Vincent’s Pizza of N.Y. The Miller family and both teams will be guests of the Carolina Hurricanes for the December 2 game against the Washington Capitals at the Entertainment & Sports Arena.

Anyone who wishes to donate to the fund can send contributions to: USSS-ERA/Miller Family Fund, P.O. Box 710333, Oak Hill, VA 20171-0333. For more information about the game, please contact Jerry Higgins, Director of Public & Media Relations for the Carolina Hurricanes, at (919) 861-5429.
