Stanley Cup Champions' first pick is 63rd overall in 2nd round

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – June 23, 2006

RALEIGH, NC – The 2006 NHL Entry Draft will take place on Saturday, June 24, at Vancouver’s General Motors Place beginning at 6 p.m. ET (OLN). The Stanley Cup Champion Carolina Hurricanes are not scheduled to make a selection until the second round, 63rd overall, and hold five other picks in the seven-round draft.

By virtue of winning the 2006 Stanley Cup, the Hurricanes received the final draft position in each round. Carolina traded its first-round pick in 2006 to St. Louis on Jan. 30, in the trade that brought Doug Weight to the Hurricanes. Carolina has its own pick in each round following the first – 63rd overall (2nd round), 93rd (3rd), 123rd (4th), 153rd (5th), 183rd (6th) and 213th (7th).
