RALEIGH, NC (December 1, 2000) – Jim Rutherford, CEO and General Manager of the Carolina Hurricanes, announced today that the team has hired Jerry Higgins as the team’s Director of Public and Media Relations. Higgins, who spent the last eight years as the pro hockey and National Football League writer with the New Haven (Ct.) Register, will join the organization starting on December 14.

Mike Sundheim, the team’s Media Relations Assistant, has served as the primary media contact for the organization since October 30 and will work with Higgins upon his arrival. Sundheim will remain the primary contact on the interim basis until Higgins joins the club on December 14. Media inquiries after December 14 may be directed to either Higgins or Sundheim.

Higgins, a 1984 graduate of Northeastern University, spent eight years as the Sports Editor for the Gloucester (Mass.) Daily Times before joining the New Haven Register. With the Register, Higgins covered the Hartford Whalers as the paper’s NHL beat writer for four years. When the organization moved to North Carolina, Higgins covered the American Hockey League’s Beast of New Haven, the Hurricanes top minor league affiliate at the time. Higgins spent the last two seasons covering the United Hockey League’s New Haven Knights.

Higgins will move to North Carolina along with his wife, Andrea, and two children: Alexandra (6) and Andrew (22 months).
