HURRICANES FALL TO FLORIDA PANTHERS, 5-0

Fort Myers, FL (September 19, 2000) – The Carolina Hurricanes suffered their second consecutive loss of the pre-season, falling to Southeast Division rival Florida Panthers, 5-0, at TECO Arena in Ft. Myers, Florida on Tuesday night. The two teams face-off again on Wednesday, September 20 at National Car Rental Center.

Despite outshooting Florida by a 32-21 margin, Carolina could not score against netminder Roberto Luongo. The Hurricanes recorded a preseason high in shots for a game, including 12 in the first period and 14 in the second period. Carolina defenseman Dave Karpa posted a team high eight shots.

Arturs Irbe made his second start of the preseason, evening his record at 1-1-0 by making 16 saves. Carolina failed to convert on 10 power-play opportunites and allowed two power-play tallies in eight short-handed situations.

Hurricanes center Tommy Westlund did not finish the game after receiving four stitches above his right eye and three stitches on his right check resulting from a high stick by Luongo in the first period.
