HURRICANES FALL TO COYOTES 2-0

by Staff Writer / Carolina Hurricanes

RALEIGH (FEB. 16, 2001) -- The Carolina Hurricanes out-shot the Phoenix Coyotes 33-18 but Phoenix goaltender Robert Esche did not allow the puck into the net. The shutout was Esche's second of his second National Hockey League career as his team defeated the Hurricanes 2-0.

Tyler Moss played his 10th game in net for the Hurricanes and stopped 16 of 17 shots he faced.

“It’s just incredible," said Carolina coach Paul Maurice. "He did exactly what we wanted him to do. He came in when we didn’t have much work because we played very well defensively. Against a team with a couple real big names, he’s going to have a few shots and he made some great saves. We just couldn’t buy a goal at the other end.”

One of those big Phoenix names, captain Keith Tkachuk scored the Coyotes' only goal against Moss. Tkachuk brought the puck across the blue line and dished it to teammate Juha Ylonen. Ylonen gave the puck back to Tkachuk who beat Moss high and to the stick side for his 25th goal of the season.

Minutes before Tkachuk’s goal, Carolina defenseman David Tanabe put the puck past Phoenix goaltender Robert Esche. The goal was disallowed as officials had whistled the play dead thinking Esche had covered the puck.

"I didn't see where the puck was and I just tried to poke at it," said Tanabe. "I think he kicked it in himself. The ref couldn't see the puck, I couldn't see the puck and he blew the whistle."

The Hurricanes had one final power play opportunity when Jeremy Roenick slashed Jeff O’Neill and gave Carolina a man-advantage for the final 1:21 of the game. Carolina pulled Moss out of the net for a six-on-four advantage. Phoenix center Mike Sullivan scored an empty net goal with 34 seconds remaining to ice the game for the Coyotes.

During the first intermission, the Hurricanes honored NHL-great Wayne Gretzky with a brief ceremony at which they honored his number-99, the only number to be retired league-wide.

Gretzky is part of an ownership group headed by Steve Ellman, a real estate developer whose group purchased the Coyotes yesterday. Gretzky visited Raleigh to address his new team.

Phoenix Coach Bob Francis met Gretzky for the first time this morning at breakfast. He joked about the Gretzky ownership era.

“Undefeated," said Francis. "The guys obviously wanted to make a good first impression. It’s a long trip back. It’s going to be a long happy trip back.”

NOTES: Carolina goaltender Arturs Irbe did not play tonight due to a groin strain. He is day-to-day.
