ESTERO, Fla. (Sept. 18, 2001) – The Carolina Hurricanes, Florida Everblades and TECO Arena presented a check for $5,965 to the American Red Cross during Tuesday’s exhibition game against the Florida Panthers at TECO Arena.
Carolina Hurricanes associate captains Rod Brind’Amour and Glen Wesley, along with Florida Everblades General Manager Craig Brush, presented the check to Keith Denning of the American Red Cross after the first period of Tuesday’s game.
The money was raised by proceeds from Saturday’s Carolina Hurricanes Red/White intra-squad scrimmage at TECO Arena. That included admission and the sales of the Carolina Hurricanes Training Camp Guide. Proceeds on the sales of the guide from Tuesday’s game will also go to the American Red Cross to aid the relief effort in New York City and Washington, D.C. after last week’s tragedies.
The Hurricanes will also hold a function at the Entertainment & Sports Arena at their first home preseason game on Saturday, Sept. 22. The Triangle American Red Cross will hold a fundraiser before and during Carolina’s game against the Atlanta Thrashers at 7 p.m. The Canes Kids n’ Community Foundation will match the amount of money raised by the Red Cross at the event.
The team will also set up its Slap Shot booth on the outside lawn before the game, with all proceeds donated to the American Red Cross relief efforts. Last week, the Hurricanes front office staff donated blood at area blood banks.
