HURRICANES DISPLAY THEIR SUPER SKILLS

by Staff Writer / Carolina Hurricanes

Tonight the Entertainment and Sports Arena played host to the Dodge NHL SuperSkills competition. Sami Kapanen skated away with the Fastest Skater award while Shane Willis took top honor in the Hardest Shot category.

Willis won last year's American Hockey League Hardest Shot competition with a 95.9 miles per hour slapshot. He posted similar results tonight posting a 95.4 MPH rocket to win tonight's competition.

"It's kind of exciting. This league is the best in the world and it's got the best players and best shooters in the world so whenever you can rank up there in the top 10 or whatever, it's very exciting," said Willis.

Kapanen won the Fastest Skater competition tonight with a time of 13.759 seconds--just .155 seconds behind league leader Patrick Marleau of San Jose. The time held off David Tanabe, his closest Hurricane competitor, by nearly .4 seconds. At last season's NHL All-Star SuperSkills competion, Kapanen took first place with a time of 13.649 seconds.

"You want to do well in the final placing and as well as measuring yourself. I skated last year and I was kind of measuring myself between last year and this year and it was really close. I guess it was a tiny, tiny bit slower than last year but there's always some reasons that cause that," said Kapanen.

By the end of the evening's events the Hurricanes had gone head-to-head in six different events and were all smiles in the locker room.

"There's a little bit of seriousness to it, but we come out here for fun and it's all for the fans. Whatever you can do to draw people to the game and show people what the NHL is all about, I think that's the main thing when you try to put stuff on like this," said Willis.
