RALEIGH, NC (Jan. 31, 2000) – Peter Karmanos, owner and governor of the National Hockey League Carolina Hurricanes and Chairman/CEO of Compuware Corporation, today announced that Jim Rutherford, who has served as the team’s President and General Manager since 1994, has been elevated to the position Chief Executive Officer and General Manager of the Carolina Hurricanes. In his new position, Rutherford will oversee the overall operations of the Carolina Hurricanes, the Florida Everblades, and the Plymouth Whalers.
“Over the past six plus years, we have worked extremely hard through some challenging circumstances,” stated Rutherford. “We are confident that we are heading in the right direction with our NHL team and the management of the Entertainment and Sports Arena. Restructuring and redefining some of our management staff and the roles they play will make our organization stronger in both the short and long term as our sport continues to grow in North Carolina.”
“The first step in this process is announcing a new team president, and we are pleased to introduce Jim Cain as our President and Chief Operating Officer. He will directly oversee all the business aspects of the Carolina Hurricanes and the Entertainment and Sports Arena.”
Cain, 42, joins the Hurricanes after spending the past 15 years with Kilpatrick Stockton LLP where he was a founder of the Raleigh office in 1985. A native of High Point, North Carolina, and a graduate of Wake University and its School of Law, Cain started his affiliation with the Hurricanes as the team’s legal counsel in 1997. He has been involved in several of the organization’s major steps towards bringing the Hurricanes to the Entertainment and Sports Arena. Cain is currently involved in several community organizations, having served as Vice Chairman of the Greater Raleigh Chamber of Commerce, Chairman of the Eastern North Carolina Chamber of Commerce, and as General Counsel to the Triangle Bid Committee for the 2007 Pan Am Games. Cain, and his wife, Helen, have two daughters, Cameron (9) and Laura (7).
“It is a dream come true to serve as president for a premiere professional sports franchise such as the Hurricanes,” stated Cain. “I share Peter Karmanos and Jim Rutherford’s devotion to strengthening the relationship between the Hurricanes and every one in this community, including North Carolina State University, the Arena Authority, the city and county, our corporate sponsors, suite and club seat holders, and most importantly, our Hurricanes fans.”
Cain will be available to the media prior to tomorrow night’s Hurricanes versus the Florida Panthers game at the Entertainment and Sports Arena in the media lounge.
Rutherford also announced that Jason Karmanos, who has served as the team’s Assistant General Manager for the past two seasons, has been promoted to Vice President/Assistant General Manager of the Hurricanes. Karmanos, a former Raleigh Icecap and graduate of Harvard University, will assume more responsibility on a day-to-day basis on hockey related matters.
