Hurricanes Announce 2010 Summer Hockey Camps

by Drew Sanchez / Carolina Hurricanes

RALEIGH, NC— Paul Strand, Youth and Amateur Hockey Coordinator for the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced the schedule for the 2010 Carolina Hurricanes Summer Hockey camps. The camps, now in their 12th year of operation, will be held in early August at the RecZone, the official practice facility of the Carolina Hurricanes, and will include appearances by Hurricanes players and coaches.

The summer hockey camps will utilize a two-week format, featuring camps for players of all skill levels. The first week, from August 2 through August 6, will be a developmental camp intended for beginner and intermediate level players. The developmental camp will focus on power skating, skill development, and a checking tutorial which focuses on the basics of safely giving and receiving checks.

The second week, from August 9 through August 13, will be the elite-level camp, targeted at more advanced players who are currently playing travel hockey. With intense on-ice instruction and the implementation of hockey strategies, the elite week should help any hockey player preparing for the upcoming season. Each camp will feature a super Friday game, enabling players to implement the skills learned during the camp sessions into game situations.

Goalie camps will also be held during the second week, with a session for netminders 10 and under and a session for goalies 11 and older.  These clinics will focus on the technical, physical and mental skills needed to take a player’s goaltending to a more consistent and confident level.

The Carolina Hurricanes Summer Hockey camps are staffed by coaches with vast hockey experience, including former professional players, current college and high-level amateur coaches and junior hockey players. Last year’s camp included participation and instruction by the Hurricanes’ Cam Ward, Chad LaRose, Rod Brind’Amour, Ron Francis and Tom Barrasso.
