Hurricanes Announce 2009 Summer Camps

by John Dougherty / Carolina Hurricanes

RALEIGH, NC— Paul Strand, Youth and Amateur Hockey Coordinator today announced the schedule for the Carolina Hurricanes summer hockey camps. The camps, now in their 11th year of operation, will be held in late July and early August at the RecZone, the Hurricanes’ official practice facility, and will include appearances by Hurricanes players and coaches.

The camp will follow the successful format utilized last summer, with two instructional camps on either side of a one-week, three-on-three, pond-hockey-style tournament. The first week, from July 27 through July 31, will be a developmental camp intended for players with three or fewer years of hockey experience. The developmental camp will focus on skill development.

The second week, Aug. 3 through Aug. 7, will feature the fourth annual Hurricanes Three-on-Three Summer Classic. The event allows participants freedom in pond-hockey-style games, creating an exciting week of competition.

The third week, Aug. 10 through Aug. 14, features the elite-level camp, targeted at more advanced players looking to take their games to the next level. With intense on-ice instruction, the elite week should help any travel hockey player prepare for the upcoming season.

Goalie camps will also be held during the first and third weeks of the hockey school. The week one goalie camp is for netminders age 10 and under. Goalie camp during the third week is for ages 11 and up.

The Carolina Hurricanes Summer Hockey camps are staffed by coaches with vast hockey experience, including former professional players, current college and high-level amateur coaches and junior hockey players. Last year’s camp featured participation and instruction by the Hurricanes’ Ron Francis, Tom Barrasso, Chad LaRose, Rod Brind’Amour, Cam Ward, Glen Wesley and Robert Kron.
