RALEIGH, NC (March 6, 2001) – The Carolina Hurricanes and the Triangle Area Chapter of the American Red Cross are joining forces for the second consecutive year to encourage the public to give blood during Red Cross Month.

From March 1-23, anyone who donates blood to the American Red Cross will receive a coupon valid for a “Buy one, get one free offer” to the March 26 Hurricanes game against the Montreal Canadiens at the Entertainment and Sports Arena. Fans who donate blood can purchase Balcony Premium or Club Level seats through this offer at the ESA box office.

“We salute the Carolina Hurricanes for encouraging others to give blood during Red Cross Month, said Jim Johnston, executive director for the Triangle Area Chapter. “A single blood donation, a mere hour of someone’s time, can save the lives of at least three people.”

Pepsi and WRAL-FM are also sponsoring the event. Last year, in excess of 300 people participated in the promotion. The Red Cross and the Hurricanes are looking to improve on that number this year.

“The Carolina Hurricanes are proud to partner with the Red Cross again to promote blood donations in the Triangle,” said Sheila Carter, the Hurricanes’ marketing manager. “During this critical shortage, it’s imperative that we help to increase awareness and encourage our fans and our community to give the gift of life.”

The local chapter of the American Red Cross will have a kiosk set up on the main concourse of the ESA during the March 26 game to provide information on blood donations and volunteer opportunities.
