RALEIGH, N.C. (July 15, 2004) – Jim Rutherford, President / General Manager of the Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has agreed to terms with free-agent defenseman Frantisek Kaberle (FRAN-tih-sehk, KA-buhr-lay) on a two-year contract. As per club policy, no other terms were announced.

“Frank is a good-skating defenseman with very good puck-moving abilities,” said Rutherford. “His skills will be a benefit to our power play, and we look forward to him joining the Hurricanes next season.”

In 2003-04, Kaberle ranked first among all Thrashers defensemen and set a career high with 29 points, including a career-best 26 assists. He finished the season with a plus-2 plus/minus rating and was one of only two Thrashers players (Shawn McEachern), and the only Thrashers defenseman, to finish better than even. Kaberle registered a career-best four-game points streak when he recorded one goal and three assists, Oct. 23-30, and matched his career-best three-game assists streak on three separate occasions.

Kaberle, 30, was originally drafted by Los Angeles in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft with the 76th overall pick. The Kladno, Czech Republic, native was traded to Atlanta along with Donald Audette in exchange for Kelly Buchberger and Nelson Emerson on March 13, 2000, during the Thrashers’ first season in the NHL. In his five-year NHL career, Kaberle (6’ 0”, 190 lbs.) has played in 309 NHL games, recording 20 goals and 91 assists (111 points) and 114 penalty minutes. He ranks fourth on Atlanta’s all-time games played list (272), fifth on its all-time assists list (82) and eighth on its all-time points list (102).
