RALEIGH, N.C. (Feb. 20, 2004) – Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the Carolina Hurricanes, announced today that the team has acquired defenseman Chris Bahen and a third-round draft pick in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft from the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for defenseman Bob Boughner. The third round draft selection acquired by Carolina is in the Washington Capitals’ draft position. Colorado had acquired Washington’s third-round selection in a trade earlier this season.

Bahen (6’1’’, 195 lbs.) has four points (0g, 4a) and 38 penalty minutes with Landshut EV in Germany this season. He played four seasons at Clarkson University between 1999 and 2003, totaling 53 points (16g, 37a) and 180 penalty minutes in 139 games and was a teammate of Hurricanes forward Erik Cole during his freshman season at Clarkson. A native of Markham, Ontario who was born in Montreal, Bahen was originally selected by the Avalanche in the sixth round (189th overall) of the 2000 NHL Entry Draft. He was not signed by Colorado following his senior year of college, but the Avalanche would have retained his rights through the 2003-04 season.

Boughner (6’ 0’’, 203 lbs.) tallied five points (0g, 5a) in 43 games with Carolina this season. Acquired by the Hurricanes from the Calgary Flames on July 16, 2003, in exchange for a fourth-round pick in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft and future considerations, Boughner missed 16 games due to injury during this season (fractured hand: Oct 9-Oct. 25; left knee: Nov. 18-Nov. 23, Feb. 3-Feb. 16). The Windsor, Ont., native has totaled 65 points (14g, 51a) and 1,320 penalty minutes in 578 career NHL games with Buffalo, Nashville, Pittsburgh, Calgary and Carolina.

The Hurricanes take on the Boston Bruins on Saturday, Feb. 20 at the RBC Center, with face-off set for 7 p.m. Tickets for Saturday’s game and all Carolina Hurricanes home games are available via the RBC Center’s Dodge Box Office, by calling TicketMaster at 919-834-4000 or via the team’s official website,
