CALGARY (JUNE 25, 2000) – The Carolina Hurricanes began the second day of the 2000 NHL Entry Draft by acquiring the first pick of the fourth round (97th overall) from the Atlanta Thrashers in exchange of Hurricanes’ draft selections in the fourth round (108th overall), fifth round (147th) and eighth round (244th) of this year’s draft. With the first overall pick of the day, the Hurricanes selected defenseman Niclas Wallin.

“It was necessary to move up in the draft order to ensure we could select Niclas Wallin,” said Hurricanes Chief Executive Officer and General Manager Jim Rutherford. “At age 25, he is a strong, hard-working defenseman who we project to be with the Hurricanes this season. Heading into the draft, we were looking to get a young, hard-nosed defenseman and we were fortunate to land Jared Newman with our fourth round pick.”

Wallin (6’3”, 220 lbs.) completed his fourth season playing for Brynas IF Gavle in Sweden last year, totaling 16 points (7g, 9a) and 73 penalty minutes in 48 games. Wallin posted career bests in goals, assists, points and penalty minutes last season. A teammate of Hurricanes forward Tommy Westlund during the 1996-97 and 1997-98 seasons, Wallin recorded 29 points (12g, 17a) and 198 penalty minutes in 185 games for Brynas IF Gavle.

The Carolina Hurricanes used the second of their two picks in the fourth round (110th overall) to select defenseman Jared Newman from the Plymouth Whalers of the Ontario Hockey League. Newman (6’2”, 180 lbs.) registered 16 points (1g, 15a) and 123 penalty minutes in 50 games during his second season in Plymouth. Newman, 18, has totaled 33 points (3g, 30a) and 180 penalty minutes in 116 games in the OHL.

In the sixth round, Carolina selected defenseman Justin Forrest with the 181st overall pick. Forrest (5’9”, 170 lbs.) completed his third season with the USA Hockey National Team Development Program and was a member of the 2000 USA Hockey Junior Select team that participated in the 2000 Viking Cup. The Auburn, New York native plans to attend Boston College as a freshman this fall.
