The 13th Annual Kids ‘N Community Foundation golf tournament is nearly six weeks away, and we are in full gear preparing for everyone to take the course. Before your Carolina Hurricanes (and many of you) fly off to Finland, the players, coaches, front office staff and broadcasters will play a round of golf all fore children and their families in our community.
Tournament registration officially opened up at the beginning of August, and I’m pleased to announce that Volvo Rents Construction Equipment|ASC Construction Equipment are back on board as the title sponsor this year, and BlueCross BlueShield of NC, Gorbec Pharmaceutical Services, McDonald’s, Pozen, Inc., and SAS are showing their support of the Kids ‘N Community Foundation through secondary sponsorships. In addition to our wonderful sponsors, participants are already registering and foursomes are filling up, so be sure to inquire soon to reserve your spot!
Each registered golfer receives two tickets to the Carolina Hurricanes preseason game on September 24th. Afterward, he/she and a guest are invited to the VIP Pairings Party with Hurricanes players, coaches, front office staff and broadcasters in the Arena Club, which will feature open food/bar as well as silent and live auctions. This year’s tournament gift bags ($250 value) will once again be highlighted by Peter Millar apparel (the same company that will be outfitting this year’s Ryder Cup team).
We hope to exceed last year’s golf tournament fundraising efforts, which generated $86,000 for the Kids ‘N Community. Don’t miss the opportunity to not only enjoy a round of golf with your favorite ‘Canes, but also to provide much needed funding for non-profit children’s organization in our community. Last year’s tournament funds supported the efforts of organizations like Interact, Inter-Faith Food Shuttle, Children’s Flight of Hope, Johnston County Arts Council, Neighbor to Neighbor, Durham Housing Authority, Autism Society of NC, New Voices Foundation, NC Symphony and Rocking Horse Ranch (I could keep going) whose funded programs better the health, education or underserved population needs of children in our community.
We hope to see you on the course!Staal’s Hat Trick Hats
No one would have thought that Eric Staal
’s hat trick during the April 8, 2009 game would impact the community, but it did. During the April 8th game of the 2009-2010 season, the first 14,000 fans received a Carolina Hurricanes hat courtesy of Chevrolet. When Eric Staal
scored a hat trick, over 500 brand new hats were thrown on the ice in celebration. Staal was able to choose the end recipient of the hats, and he chose to donate the hats to children at our local hospitals.
This past Wednesday, Stormy and members of the Eye Care Associates Storm Squad distributed 350 hats to child outpatient clinics and deserving hospital staff at UNC Children’s Hospital and Duke Children’s Hospital. Inpatients received bobbleheads and posters. At UNC, we were able to really interact with the patients in the play atrium where Stormy dominated on the Rock Band drums (see above). The community relations staff, along with Stormy and a member of the Eye Care Associates Storm Squad, will wrap up the hat giving on Monday when they visit the children’s wing at Rex Hospital. A feature story and video will be coming out next week, but I wanted to give you all a taste of the joy that so many hats brought to children at local hospitals who were in need of a distraction and a smile.
