CANES LINEUP NOTES AND PETERS QUOTES
3:25 p.m.
As expected, Cam Ward will get the nod in net this evening for the Hurricanes, who will otherwise ice the same lineup utilized yesterday in New York. Elias Lindholm remains sidelined with a lower-body concern.
Here's more from the head coach this afternoon.
On yesterday's 4-2 loss in New York: "We've got to find solutions. I don't use that 'frustration' word. I don't think it's going to help you. I just know in New York yesterday, with five minutes to go in the second, the shots are 25-9, it's 1-1 and we're on a two-man advantage. … You're playing well and on a two-man advantage. Those are the moments you've got to step up. To me, that's how you find the solution to the problem."
On fine lines in close games, like the two-man advantage in New York: "It's a big, pivotal time. … You talk about moments in the game, and those are moments, huge moments."
On snapping this three-game winless streak: "I think everyone is well aware. We have to stop the bleeding. … We went out east, lost three games and got one out of six points. Now, we want to stop the bleeding. The only way to do that is to get a win here today."
On the team's focus: "We have enough skill that we should score more than we do. That's the focus right now. Defensively, I think we've been fine. … We've got to find a way to get offensive support."
On Jordan Staal (concussion): "Getting closer. Had a real good workout yesterday, off-ice. He's going to get on the ice tomorrow. As of right now, progressing, the way I understand it, and a chance to come on the trip."
On Elias Lindholm (lower body): "I think we'll have him at some point on the trip if not maybe to start the trip, but that's just me speculating and being optimistic."
On Eddie Lack (concussion): "I think [it's progressing], but you know, those are tricky situations. … It looks like it's going one way and then it can turn the other. I think it's going the right way, but I'm not sure 100 percent."
CANES RETURN HOME TO HOST LIGHTNING
6:00 a.m.
Just as they did a week ago, the Carolina Hurricanes return home for the second half of a back-to-back set at the tail end of a three-game road trip, only to then depart once more.
In the second leg of a stretch that features nine of 11 games on the road, the Carolina Hurricanes went winless in three games, dropping two regulation decisions to the New York Rangers and snagging a point in a shootout loss to the Boston Bruins.
"We're just not capitalizing on our chances," Lee Stempniak said after a 4-2 loss at Madison Square Garden on Saturday. "We're doing a lot of little things right. We're leaving our zone pretty well and moving the puck cleanly, we're just not able to capitalize."
Tonight, the Hurricanes return home to host a former Southeast Division rival in the Tampa Bay Lightning, their first and only visit to PNC Arena this season. The Bolts topped the Capitals 2-1 in a shootout on Saturday night, a game that began shortly after the Hurricanes landed at RDU in their return from New York.
The Lightning are .500 in their last 10 games (5-5-0) and are under .500 on the road this season (7-8-0). Tampa Bay's last win away from home came on Nov. 19 in Philadelphia. The team has since dropped four straight on the road.
The story of the Canes' latest road trip was their inability to finish when given the opportunity, both in protecting leads and generating sufficient offense.
"You've got to get hungry to score. You can't be just content to play well. You need offensive contributions out of your top six. That's the reality," head coach Bill Peters said. "Three (goals) is the magic number. You've got to be able to get to three."
"We've been playing hard," said Victor Rask, who scored one of the Canes' two goals in New York on Saturday. "We're in the game pretty much every game. We've just got to find a way to win those games."
Michael Leighton got the nod in net on Saturday against the Rangers. In his second start of the season, Leighton stopped 19 of 23 shots. In this back-to-back situation, expect to see Cam Ward in net tonight against Tampa Bay.
CANESPR NOTES: With his goal on Saturday, Rask is now just one point shy of 100 career NHL points (41g, 58a). … This is the third of 16 back-to-backs this season. The Hurricanes are 1-2-0 in the front halves and 1-1-0 in the back halves.
