CANES LINEUP NOTES
1:00 p.m.
Forward Derek Ryan is in the Hurricanes' lineup this afternoon with Brock McGinn "highly, highly questionable" for today's contest, according to head coach Bill Peters. As announced yesterday, Eddie Lack will make his second consecutive start in net.
We'll keep an eye on warm-ups and pass along additional lineup updates as we spot them then.
CANES CLOSE OUT HOMESTAND AGAINST FLAMES
6:00 a.m.
A five-game homestand draws to a close for the Carolina Hurricanes when they host the Calgary Flames in a Sunday afternoon faceoff.
The Hurricanes snapped a five-game winless skid in a 3-0 shutout win against the Ottawa Senators on Friday night. Jordan Staal, Elias Lindholm and Viktor Stalberg tallied goals, Phil Di Giuseppe notched two primary assists and Eddie Lack made 34 saves in his first shutout of the season.
"I felt like we were controlling from the start," Lack said. "The boys came out flying, and I just had to be big in everything when I had to. It was a good night for us."
The Hurricanes will turn back to Lack in net on Sunday. The Swedish netminder's win on Friday night was his second of the season. His first? It came on October 20 in Calgary against this same Flames team in what was the Hurricanes first victory of the season and first win in Calgary since 2002. Lack is 5-2-0 with a 1.99 goals-against average in six career appearances against the Flames.
"Gets a shutout, gets a win, hasn't played a lot," head coach Bill Peters said. "He deserves to go back."
The Hurricanes skated Saturday at Raleigh Center Ice, a morning skate of sorts before their matinee faceoff against Calgary.
"They know how they have to play to have success, and they did that last night," Peters said. "All four lines found a way to contribute."
Brock McGinn, who skated in just over 10 minutes on Friday night, was injured in the game and did not practice with the team on Saturday. Peters said he'll be out of the lineup against Calgary, likely meaning Derek Ryan will draw back in. Final line combinations, Peters added, would be finalized later Saturday afternoon.
"It's one of those that we're going to give him a little bit of time," Peters said of McGinn. "I don't think it's going to be anything long-term but we'll be smart about it."
As the Hurricanes close out a five-game homestand, Raleigh marks Calgary's final stop on a five-game road swing. The Flames are 3-0-1 on the trip thus far; the team lost in overtime to the Vancouver Canucks at the outset and then scored three consecutive victories over Nashville, Tampa Bay and Florida.
At 32-26-4 (68 points), the Flames currently occupy the first wild card spot in the Western Conference. The Hurricanes remain 10 points out of wild card playoff positioning in the Eastern Conference.
CANESPR NOTES: The Canes will don their third jerseys this afternoon for the eighth time this season. The team is 6-1-0 in the alternate threads this season and has outscored opponents 32-20 in those games. The Canes own a 63-35-9 all-time record in their black uniforms. … With a goal and an assist on Friday, Staal leads the Canes with nine multi-point games this season.
