TOMORROW’S GAME
The Carolina Hurricanes return to the RBC Center on Friday to face the Pittsburgh Penguins (7 p.m., Hurricanes Radio Network) in the teams’ final meeting of 2006-07. The Hurricanes (71 pts.) enter Friday’s game one point behind the Montreal Canadiens for eighth place in the Eastern Conference standings, and three points behind the Atlanta Thrashers for second place in the Southeast Division. Following Friday’s game, the Hurricanes will practice at the RecZone at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday prior to traveling to Atlanta for a Sunday matinee against the Thrashers at Philips Arena (2 p.m., Hurricanes Radio Network).

AGAINST THE PENGUINS
Friday marks the fourth and final meetings this season between the Hurricanes and the Penguins, and the second of two contests between the clubs in Raleigh. The Hurricanes took the teams’ first meeting at Mellon Arena on Oct. 14 by a 5-1 score, and scored a 6-2 win at the RBC Center on Nov. 11. Pittsburgh scored a 3-0 win at Mellon Arena on Jan. 2 in the teams’ most recent meeting. Last season, the Hurricanes posted a 3-1-0 record in four games against the Penguins, scoring a shootout win at the RBC Center and two wins at Mellon Arena. Eric Staal led all scorers with 12 points (4g, 8a) in the four-game set while Mark Recchi, who joined the Hurricanes at the trading deadline, paced Pittsburgh with five points (4g, 1a) in the season series between the teams. The Carolina franchise holds a 43-46-11-1 all-time record against the Penguins, with a 24-22-5 home record and a 19-24-6-1 record in the Civic Arena.

CAROLINA NOTES

  • The Hurricanes enter Friday’s play with 71 points, trailing Tampa Bay and Atlanta (74 points) in the Southeast Division standings, and four points behind the fifth-place Penguins in the Eastern Conference standings.

  • Left wing Ray Whitney has earned points in 18 of Carolina’s last 23 games, scoring 11 goals and earning 18 assists (29 points) dating back to Jan. 6. Whitney picked up multiple assists in four of those games, earning two helpers on Jan. 6 against the NY Islanders, Jan. 9 at Toronto and Feb. 8 at Boston, and three assists on Jan. 26 against Washington.

  • It is impossible to divide the 82-game NHL schedule into perfect thirds, but when looking at the first 27 games of the season, Carolina went 14-10-3. In the next 28 games (games 28-55), the Hurricanes posted a 12-12-4 record, and the team has started the final third of the season 6-5-0 (27 games; games 56-82).

  • While the Hurricanes have won just seven games in their last 18 outings, the team has won six of its last 11 games and earned points in 14 of its last 23 games, going 11-9-3 since Jan. 6, and earning 25 of a possible 46 points in that span.

  • Carolina enters Friday’s play in ninth place in the Eastern Conference standings. Seven of the Hurricanes’ final 16 games are against teams currently ranked higher in the Eastern Conference standings.
