RALEIGH, NC—The fourth annual Friesen 5k will be held this Sunday, August 30, at the RBC Center in Raleigh at 9 a.m. The race, which benefits the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Eastern North Carolina, was created in 2006 to celebrate Carolina Hurricanes Head Trainer/Strength and Conditioning Coach Peter Friesen’s day with the Stanley Cup. In its first three years, the event has raised more than $75,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Eastern North Carolina.
This year, the Friesen 5k will provide runners with an official time, courtesy of Carolina Timing & Events and the latest IPICO Timing System technology. The top three overall timed male and female runners will receive awards, as well as all timed runners being eligible for a special drawing for one of five pairs of free shoes from The Athlete’s Foot in Cameron Village. An additional $5 fee will apply for runners who would like to have their official time recorded, or participants can choose to run without receiving an official time.
New to this year’s event will be the implementation of a team competition. The teams with the highest fundraising contributions will receive a special award from Friesen and the Carolina Hurricanes. All teams must designate a captain and have a team name. Funds raised for the event must be turned in before the run on Sunday.
As in prior years, a 100-yard Kids Caniac Dash will be held for children 6-and-younger, as well as a 200-yard Caniac Dash for children ages 7-10 following the conclusion of the main race.
