Center celebrated week of 21st birthday with first career hat trick and four-assist night

The Carolina Hurricanes selected Eric Staal with the second overall pick in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft.

RALEIGH, NC – The National Hockey League today announced that Hurricanes center Eric Staal has been named the league’s Offensive Player of the Week. Staal notched four goals and six assists and was plus-5 this past week to help the Hurricanes defeat the Ottawa Senators, Boston Bruins, Philadelphia Flyers and Pittsburgh Penguins to vault the team into first place in the Southeast Division and the Eastern Conference.

On Friday, Oct. 28 against Philadelphia, Staal scored his first career hat trick in Carolina’s 8-6 win against Philadelphia at the RBC Center. The following day, on his 21st birthday, he earned a career-high four assists against the Pittsburgh Penguins, helping Carolina rebound from a two-goal deficit for the fourth consecutive game to earn the victory – the first time in NHL history that a team has done so. The Thunder Bay, Ont. native completed the week as the NHL’s leading scorer with 22 points (9g, 13a) in 11 games. He ranks tied for third in the league in goals (9) and assists (13), is second in the league in shots (54) and is tied for fifth in the league in plus/minus (+8).

Selected by the Hurricanes with the second overall pick in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, Staal now has at least one point in 10 of Carolina’s 11 games this season. In 92 career regular-season NHL games, he has tallied 20 goals and 33 assists (53 points). Staal is the first Hurricanes player to receive NHL Player of the Week honors since Ron Francis did so on Jan. 7, 2002.
