East Durham Children's Initiative Committed to Changing Lives

by Kristina Boyce / Carolina Hurricanes

On June 6, 2012, Stormy and members of the Carolina Hurricanes staff visited Y.E. Smith Elementary to check out the East Durham Children’s Initiative. This was our final check presentation of the summer to highlight a few of the non-profit children’s organizations we fund. During the Spring cycle, the Kids ‘N Community Foundation donated $280,447 to 26 non-profit children’s charities in North Carolina.

The East Durham Children’s Initiative (EDCI) is committed to changing outcomes and expectations for children and families living in a 120-block area of East Durham. Modeled after the Harlem Children’s Zone, EDCI aims to reach this goal by providing a pipeline of high-quality services that starts with children at birth and continues with them through elementary school, middle school and high school.

The Foundation provided a grant this spring for $15,000 for scholarships for the EDCI’s Soaring Through Summer Camp.

David Reese, Executive Director of the East Durham Children’s Initiative, said, “EDCI creates a pipeline of services for children starting at birth all the way up to college or career. We are very excited that the Hurricanes are a part of the process this year. What we do know as well, is that kids participating in camp are much more likely to have no learning loss, which is huge. We are sure to have kids that can perform at grade level when they return back to school.”

Doug Warf, Carolina Hurricanes Vice President of Marketing and Executive Director of the Kids ‘N Community Foundation said, “I think what is going to happen is a change in the learning loss that happens over the summer for kids. So, when they come back in they will be more prepared to learn when they walk in. That is a big challenge for teachers, so we want to make sure that those teachers have an easy chance to make sure that the kids are ready to succeed.”

At our visit, Stormy and Hurricanes staff were able to spend time with students, teachers and the principal at Y.E. Smith Elementary. It was encouraging to see the teachers' smiles when Stormy was walking around the room, thanking each teacher for their hard work and dedication they put into ensuring each student is successful.

The Carolina Hurricanes are thrilled to partner with other organizations to support the East Durham Children’s Initiative. It is a truly powerful organization with a vision to have all children in the EDCI zone graduate from high school, ready for college or a career.

Thank you to all of our fans and supporters for your contributions to the Kids ‘N Community Foundation. Without your support, the $15,000 grant for EDCI would not have been possible.
